Illusions of Fate by Kiersten White: A Magical Romantic Comedy for Girls

Illusions of Fate is a relatable Young Adult (YA) fantasy story about a girl named Jessamin, who is a dark skinned island girl who moves to the big posh city, and just doesn’t fit in.  She is a witty and strong willed heroine who doesn’t expect any favors, but just wants to be treated like everyone else and to earn her own way in the world.

Fans of Jane Austen will appreciate Jessamin’s dry and well timed humor, and fans of YA authors such as Cassandra Clare will soak up the enchanting yet familiar world that author Kiersten White paints.

In addition to a great heroine a magically enjoyable world, the plot hits the sweet spot between mystery and simplicity.  It’s just enough to keep you guessing, but reveals what’s behind the curtain just in time.  It’s easy to understand, yet highly enjoyable.  Romantic, yet never explicit.  Another valuable asset which many will appreciate in this world full of long series, is that Illusions of Fate a stand alone novel that doesn’t need any elaboration on it’s story.  Like many short stories, it’s just as long as it needs to be, and not a page longer.  There is no commitment to find out once you’ve finished that there will be two or three or four sequels.

My recommended age for readers of this book would be 12+, and while I’m all for breaking down gender stereotypes, this is a book probably most enjoyed by women who love a good action/adventure/romance.  Great for girls in junior high and highschool for a quick read or book report, but wonderful fun for adult women who enjoy reading their chick flicks instead of watching them for a change.

Now get reading!
